Make plans to join members of the Hampden Writers Group on Saturday, August 8th at R. House for quiet(ish) in-person creative writing.

We’ll kick off right around 1:00pm. We’ll probably be in the main hall, but we may decide to write outside on the patio if space inside is limited or occupied.

(This event also appears on our calendar of events!)

The agenda is simple:

1:05-1:15p – we’ll do a round of introductions including name, neighborhood, pronouns, and what you’re working on.

1:15-1:40p – we’ll participate in a quiet, timed 25-minute writing sprint.

1:40-1:50p – we’ll take a few minutes to look over our work; if you’d like, you may share your favorite (or least favorite!) word or sentence that you wrote (this exercise helps to avoid feeling anxious about writing without editing; it should only be a single word or short sentence).

1:50-2:20p – a second (and final) 25-minute writing sprint.

2:20–2:30p – wrap up and head out!

And don’t worry! If you’re looking for inspiration, we’ll have a number of writing prompts with ideas related to “LOVE” (this is the theme for the forthcoming issue of The Avenue Journal (click to read previously-published work if you’d like an idea of the spectrum of what we publish).

writ·ing sprint(ˈrī-tiŋ ˈsprint)
a timed generative writing exercise where the focus is to write as much as possible in
the allotted period of time without editing, discussion, research, or other distractions."

This event is free, doesn’t require an RSVP or pre-work, and you don’t need to be a member of the Hampden Writers Group to participate. We encourage you to patronize the vendors (R. House has multiple food stalls as well as a full bar), but all you’ll need to bring is your preferred writing implements and your imagination.

We hope to see you Saturday for our first ever Writing Alone, Writing Together, but this will be a recurring event, happening once or twice each month!
