In Memory Of A Dog That Loved The Beach But Not The Waves
by Sharon Cote
A sunset tide at times still tries to seize me,
when all my waves of breath are tugged
by shifting gravities of love and loss,
and I can taste the salty crash.
And then the heavy light at last slips down,
a more tepid moon asserts its sway,
the swells are tamed again.
I start to turn away.
But those retreating waves
pull scents and shells and polished glass away with them,
and I cannot give up these still fierce tides.
Sharon Cote, a linguist and a rather late-in-the-making poet, often
explores different voices and perspectives in her poems, drawing from
both the everyday and the fantastic. She lives in the Shenandoah Valley
in Virginia with her husband and the lovable but rather strange dog that
currently runs their lives (but is not the dog that inspired this particular
poem).
